04

The specification

What makes an engineered oak board, and the choices that matter when you specify one.

Construction

Real oak on a stable core

A sawn oak wear layer of 3mm to 6mm, bonded to a cross-laid multi-ply core. The oak is the part you see and walk on; the core keeps the board flat and stable.

Thickness

14mm, 15mm or 20mm

Most of our boards are 14mm with a 3mm oak layer, which suits most homes. 15mm boards carry 4mm of oak, and our 20mm boards carry 5mm or 6mm for floors where the height is already set.

Width

125mm to 260mm

Planks run from a classic 125mm through 190mm and 220mm to 240mm and 260mm wide plank. Herringbone comes in 90mm, 125mm and 150mm blocks.

Grade

Prime, select or character

Prime grade shows a clean, even face with few knots; select and character grades carry more natural markings. The grade changes the look, not the durability.

Finish

Oiled or lacquered

Oiled floors have a soft, natural feel and can be spot-repaired. Lacquered floors are sealed and need less routine care. Both arrive factory-finished, ready to live on.

Underfloor heating

Every board is suitable

All of our engineered oak can go over underfloor heating, glued down for full contact so the heat passes through evenly.

Engineered Oak
Flooring, Answered

The questions we are asked most often about engineered oak.

Ask Us Anything →
What is engineered oak flooring?
Engineered oak flooring is a real oak floor built in layers. The top layer is solid sawn oak, 3mm to 6mm thick depending on the board, bonded to a cross-laid multi-ply core. Once it is down, it looks and feels exactly like solid oak because the surface you see and walk on is solid oak. The layered core is what makes it more stable than a solid board.
Is engineered oak better than solid oak?
For most homes, yes. The layered core resists the swelling and shrinking that makes solid boards gap and cup, so engineered oak can go over concrete, screed and underfloor heating where solid oak would struggle. Solid oak still suits a sound timber subfloor with no underfloor heating. Our engineered vs solid guide sets out the differences.
Can engineered oak go over underfloor heating?
Yes. Every engineered oak floor we supply is suitable for underfloor heating. We glue it down over heated screed so the boards are in full contact with the subfloor and the heat passes through evenly. See our underfloor heating guide for how we install over it.
How many times can engineered oak be sanded?
It depends on the oak layer. A 3mm layer can typically be fully sanded two or three times, and our 5mm and 6mm boards several times more. Each sand removes well under a millimetre, and most floors only ever need their oil or lacquer refreshed rather than a full sand.
What thickness of engineered oak should I choose?
Most homes suit a 14mm or 15mm board. Where the floor height is already set, for example by a poured screed or existing door thresholds, a 20mm board may be needed. Settle the thickness before ordering, because it is the one specification that cannot be changed on site.
Do you deliver engineered oak flooring outside London?
Yes. We supply engineered oak flooring throughout the UK and deliver straight to site. Our own fitting team works across London and the South East, and for projects further afield we supply the floor for your own fitters or builder.
Can I see the floor before I order?
Yes. We post free samples anywhere in the UK, so you can see each floor in your own room and light before deciding. Order samples here.
