Herringbone is the most requested laying pattern across London homes — and the one that demands the most precision in execution. LIGNORA installs herringbone flooring across all London boroughs and throughout the South East, in engineered oak on concrete and timber subfloors, with datum line setting, glue-down fixing, and on-site finishing as standard.
Herringbone has been the dominant pattern in London residential flooring for the last fifteen years because it does something no other pattern does — it gives the floor a visual energy that makes a room feel more considered than the same boards laid straight. In a period hallway, it creates an immediate impression of quality. In an open-plan kitchen-diner, it connects the space across different functional zones. In a reception room, it gives the floor enough presence to hold its own against strong wall colours and architectural features.
The pattern is demanding to install correctly. The datum line — the central axis from which the herringbone is set — must be positioned relative to how the room is seen and used, not just geometrically centred. A herringbone laid correctly disappears into the room. One laid incorrectly becomes the most noticeable thing in it.
LIGNORA installs herringbone across London — from Chelsea and Mayfair to Hackney and Richmond — and throughout Surrey, Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire, Berkshire, and Middlesex. Every installation is carried out by our own team, with no subcontractors on any job.
The traditional herringbone proportion — board width is one-quarter of board length. Works in rooms of any size and is the most commonly specified format in London period properties. Creates a balanced, classic pattern that reads well in both period and contemporary interiors.
A more contemporary proportion — the boards are wider relative to their length, creating a more open pattern with less visual density. Well-suited to larger rooms and open-plan spaces where the smaller traditional proportion can look busy. Increasingly specified in London's lateral apartments and open-plan kitchen extensions.
Two boards laid side by side at each step rather than one — creating a wider, more emphatic V-pattern. A less common specification, but distinctive in formal rooms and large reception spaces where the scale of the room can accommodate a bolder pattern. Quoted individually as it increases installation time and waste.
The format to choose depends on the room size, ceiling height, and the visual density you want from the floor. We bring samples of multiple formats on every home visit — the right proportion becomes obvious when you see it in the space rather than in a catalogue.
Glue-down on concrete is the standard and recommended fixing method for herringbone. It produces the most stable result — no board movement, no creaking, maximum rigidity — which matters more for herringbone than for straight lay because any individual board movement is visible in a pattern rather than absorbed by the surrounding boards.
The concrete subfloor must be flat to within 3mm over 1.8m before any herringbone installation begins. We self-level sections that are out of tolerance as part of the standard project scope — included in the quote, not added as a day-rate afterwards. Moisture is tested before work begins; anything above 75% RH requires a barrier.
On timber subfloors, herringbone can be installed in engineered oak using secret-nail or adhesive, depending on the product and subfloor condition. We assess this during the home visit. Solid wood herringbone is not recommended — the movement in solid boards across the short grain of a herringbone pattern creates problems that engineered oak eliminates.
All LIGNORA herringbone installations using engineered oak are compatible with underfloor heating. The recommended thickness for UFH is 14–18mm — at this thickness, heat transfers efficiently to the room and the board remains stable through seasonal temperature and humidity changes. Glue-down is the preferred fixing method above UFH. We confirm compatibility in writing and provide a warm-up protocol at handover. Full UFH guide
We install herringbone flooring across all London boroughs and throughout our South East service area. Herringbone is particularly popular in Chelsea, Kensington, Richmond, Wimbledon, Islington, Hampstead, Mayfair, and Chiswick — where the period property stock suits the pattern especially well. It is equally well specified in contemporary apartments in Shoreditch, Hackney, and Battersea.
We visit the property, assess the subfloor, and show you the pattern in your space with real samples before you commit to anything. Every quote is itemised and free.
