Engineered Wood Flooring Thickness

Two numbers matter on an engineered board: the total thickness and the thickness of the oak on top. The first decides floor heights; the second decides how long the floor lasts.

01

What the numbers mean

A board described as 14/3 is 14mm thick with a 3mm oak layer.

14mm

3mm oak layer

Our most common board. Low build-up, quick to warm over underfloor heating, and enough oak for two or three full sands.

15mm

4mm oak layer

A little more oak to sand, for almost the same floor height. Many of our wide planks are 15mm.

20mm

5–6mm oak layer

For fixed floor heights and the longest sanding life. See our 20mm floors.

02

Choosing a thickness

Start with the floor height, then the heating, then how long you want the floor to last.

Choose 14–15mm when

  • The floor height is still flexible
  • There is underfloor heating
  • You are fitting over an existing floor and want minimal build-up
  • You want the widest choice of colours and patterns

Choose 20mm when

  • A screed or thresholds already set the height
  • You want the most sanding life
  • You are fitting over a timber subfloor or joists
  • You want the feel of a solid floor

Remember to allow for adhesive or underlay in the floor height. Thickness is the one specification that cannot be changed on site, so settle it before ordering.

The questions we are asked most often.

Ask Us Anything →
What thickness should engineered wood flooring be?
Most homes suit 14mm or 15mm. Choose 20mm where the floor height is already fixed or you want the longest sanding life.
Is thicker engineered wood flooring better?
Not always. A thicker board has more oak to sand and feels more solid, but it adds height and a little resistance to underfloor heating. The right thickness depends on the room.
What does 14/3 mean on engineered flooring?
The board is 14mm thick in total, with a 3mm layer of solid oak on top of the core.
What thickness of engineered wood is best for underfloor heating?
A 14mm or 15mm board suits most underfloor heating systems because it lets heat through easily. 20mm also works if the heating has enough output.
