Choosing a dark oak floor

How this tone behaves in a room, and what to put with it.

Rooms

Where it works

Large rooms with good light, formal reception rooms, studies and libraries. A dark floor grounds a tall, bright space.

Pairing

What to pair it with

Pale walls for contrast, or deep colours for a cocooning room. Velvet, leather, brass and warm lighting all suit a dark floor.

Smoked oak

How smoking works

Traditionally, oak is smoked by fuming, which reacts with the natural tannins so the colour goes into the timber rather than sitting on the surface. The result varies from board to board, which is part of its appeal.

Answered

Common questions about dark & smoked engineered oak.

Ask Us Anything →
Does dark oak flooring show dust and scratches?
Dark floors show light dust, pet hair and fine scratches more than light floors. A brushed or oiled surface disguises everyday wear, and oiled floors can be spot-repaired.
What is smoked oak?
Smoked oak is oak darkened to a deep, warm brown. Traditionally this is done by fuming, which reacts with the natural tannins in the wood, so the colour varies naturally from board to board. Each floor page gives its exact finish.
Will a dark floor make my room feel smaller?
In a small, dim room it can. In a room with good light or pale walls, a dark floor adds depth and makes the space feel grounded rather than smaller.
Can dark engineered oak go over underfloor heating?
Yes. Every dark and smoked floor we supply is suitable for underfloor heating, glued down over the heated screed.
