Douglas fir is not oak, and that is the whole point of it. It grows fast, and fast growth leaves wide, open, flame-shaped grain — long figured bands that run the length of a board and give a floor real movement before a single drop of colour is applied. Laid in 260mm widths at lengths up to three metres, it produces one of the most striking floors available in Britain.

Made in Britain, not imported Almost every Douglas fir floor sold in the UK is machined abroad and shipped in. Ours is not. The timber is Canadian Douglas fir; the flooring is manufactured here in the United Kingdom, in a factory producing over 80,000m² of engineered flooring a year, with FSC® and PEFC certification and full control from timber selection through to final finish.

That matters for more than provenance. UK manufacture means we can hold longer lengths, order the 200mm width when a room calls for it, and add matching herringbone, chevron and stair treads to the same batch — so a whole house runs on one floor rather than three near-matches.

How it is built Every board is two-layer engineered construction: a Douglas fir wear layer over hardwood plywood, at 15.5mm total with a 3.7mm wear layer, or 20.5mm with a 5.7mm wear layer where floor heights are already set by screed. Tongue and groove on four sides, bevelled long edge, moisture content held at 8–10%, and rated for underfloor heating.

Grade and character The boards are graded Prime / Rustic A mix. Many are clear of knots entirely; others carry sound knots to 35mm and small dead knots to 20mm. Sapwood is not treated as a defect in Douglas fir — the pale and amber bands sitting side by side is the species doing what it is meant to do.

Five ways to have it The collection runs as one unfinished board and four prefinished tones — from the near-white of Cragside Frost through the weathered greige of Dunkeld Smoke to the scorched dark of Kielder Ember. The unfinished board is for projects where the finish is chosen on site; the prefinished boards are sealed at the factory and walk-on ready the day they are laid.

Douglas fir is softer than oak. It marks more readily, and it deepens in colour faster — both of which are reasons people choose it. If you want a floor that stays exactly as delivered, we will point you towards engineered oak instead and say so plainly.
