02

Why distressed

Distressing gives a floor the marks of age without the problems of old timber.

Character

Aged by hand

Each board is aged and distressed by hand, so knots, cracks and edges look softened by years of use. Colour and texture vary from board to board, and no two are the same.

Practical

Hides everyday wear

A floor that already carries marks shrugs off new ones. Distressed oak is one of the most forgiving choices for family homes, pets and busy rooms.

Stability

Reclaimed look, modern core

You get the look of a reclaimed floor on an engineered core, so it is stable over concrete and underfloor heating, where old boards would move.

03

Distressed or reclaimed?

Both give a floor real age. One is made to look old, the other has genuinely lived a life.

Choose distressed engineered when

  • You want a consistent, stocked floor with a known lead time
  • The floor goes over concrete or underfloor heating
  • You need large areas to match
  • You want the look of age without the restoration work
All engineered oak

Choose reclaimed when

  • You want genuinely old timber with its own history
  • The project is a period restoration
  • Each board being unique matters more than consistency
  • You can allow for selection and preparation time

Distressed Oak,
Answered

The questions we are asked most often.

Ask Us Anything →
What is distressed oak flooring?
Distressed oak is oak that has been deliberately aged by hand, so the boards show softened edges, knots, cracks and strong colour variation, like a floor that has been walked on for generations.
Is distressed oak flooring practical?
Very. Because the surface already carries texture and marks, everyday scratches and dents blend in rather than stand out. That makes it one of the most forgiving floors for children, pets and busy rooms.
Are the cracks and knots filled?
It depends on the floor. On Farmhouse, Barn, Rafter and Weathered Oak, the knots and cracks are slump-filled and worked by hand, giving a smoother surface. Other distressed floors keep a more open, weathered texture. Each floor page and spec sheet gives the exact finish.
Is distressed engineered oak the same as reclaimed?
No. Reclaimed flooring is genuinely old timber salvaged from older buildings. Distressed engineered oak is new oak aged by hand on a stable core, so it is consistent, available in larger quantities and suitable for underfloor heating. See our Reclaimed Collection if you want the real thing.
Can distressed oak go over underfloor heating?
Yes. Every engineered oak floor we supply, distressed or not, is suitable for underfloor heating when glued down over the heated screed.
