How Long to Acclimatise Wood Flooring

Wood takes on the moisture of the air around it. Acclimatising lets the boards settle to the conditions of the room before they are fixed down, so they do not shrink or swell afterwards.

01

How long

For engineered oak, days rather than weeks.

Our engineered floors are already acclimatised in a controlled environment before delivery. On site, we usually allow two to three days in the rooms where the floor will be laid, or one to two days where the house has been through extensive renovation and the boards arrive during the subfloor preparation.

Solid wood generally needs longer, often a week or more, because it moves more. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidance on the spec sheet for the specific floor.

02

Getting the room ready

Acclimatising only works if the room is already at living conditions.

Before the boards arrive

  • Wet trades are finished: plastering, screeding and painting have dried out
  • Screeds are dry, checked with a moisture meter, and underfloor heating has been commissioned
  • Windows and doors are in and the heating is running at normal living temperature
  • Boards are stored flat, in their packs, in the rooms where they will be laid, not in a garage or conservatory

Why it matters

Skipping acclimatisation is one of the most common causes of floor problems.

If boards are fitted while they are still adjusting, they keep moving after they are fixed. Boards that take on moisture swell, which can push joints up and cause cupping. Boards that dry out shrink, which opens gaps. On our installations, acclimatisation is never shortened.

The questions we are asked most often.

Ask Us Anything →
How long should engineered wood flooring acclimatise?
Usually two to three days in the room where it will be laid, once the room is at normal living temperature and humidity. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance for the specific floor.
Do you need to acclimatise engineered wood flooring?
Yes. Engineered boards move far less than solid wood, but they still need to settle to the conditions of the room before fitting to avoid gaps or cupping later.
Should I open the boxes to acclimatise wood flooring?
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Many engineered floors are acclimatised in their unopened packs, laid flat in the room.
Can wood flooring acclimatise in a garage?
No. The boards need to acclimatise in the rooms where they will be laid, at living temperature. A garage or conservatory has very different conditions.
