Wood Flooring in Bathrooms

Engineered oak can work in a bathroom, but not in every bathroom. It depends on how much water reaches the floor, how well the room is ventilated and how the floor is finished and sealed.

01

Where it works

A bathroom is a judgement call, not a yes or no.

Good candidates

  • En-suites and family bathrooms with a separate shower enclosure
  • Cloakrooms and WCs
  • Rooms with an extractor fan and a window
  • Bathrooms where the floor runs through from a bedroom

Not suitable

  • Wet rooms and walk-in showers without a tray
  • Bathrooms where water regularly pools on the floor
  • Rooms with no ventilation
  • Children’s bathrooms with a lot of splashing
02

How to protect it

The finish and the fitting make the difference.

Finish

Lacquer, not oil

A lacquered finish seals the surface, so splashes sit on top and can be wiped away. Oiled floors are more absorbent and need more care in a bathroom.

Fitting

Sealed edges

The perimeter and any joints around the bath, shower tray, toilet and pipes are sealed with a flexible sealant so water cannot get under the boards.

Habits

Dry spills quickly

Use a bath mat, wipe up standing water straight away and run the extractor fan after baths and showers to keep humidity down.

The questions we are asked most often.

Ask Us Anything →
Can you put wood flooring in a bathroom?
Yes, engineered wood can work in a bathroom with a separate shower enclosure and good ventilation, provided it has a lacquered finish and sealed edges. It is not suitable for wet rooms or bathrooms where water pools on the floor.
Is engineered wood better than solid wood in a bathroom?
Yes. The engineered core is far more stable as humidity rises and falls, so it is much less likely to cup or gap than solid wood.
Which finish is best for wood flooring in a bathroom?
A lacquered finish, because it seals the surface against splashes. Oiled floors can be used but need more frequent maintenance.
Can engineered wood go over underfloor heating in a bathroom?
Yes. Every engineered oak floor we supply is suitable for underfloor heating, which also helps a bathroom floor dry quickly.
