20mm Engineered Oak Flooring

Thicker boards with a deeper oak layer: 12 floors at 20mm, each carrying 5mm or 6mm of sawn oak. The right board when the floor height is already fixed, or when you want the most sanding life an engineered floor can give.

01

The floors

12 floors, all 20mm thick. Lacquered, oiled and distressed finishes, 190mm and 200mm wide.

02

Why 20mm

Thickness is the one specification that cannot be changed on site, so it is worth getting right first.

Floor height

Matching a set level

Where a screed has already been poured, or the new floor must meet existing thresholds, stairs or door heights, a 20mm board fills the gap without packing or extra build-up.

Wear layer

5mm to 6mm of oak

Our 20mm boards carry 5mm or 6mm of sawn oak, compared with 3mm on a 14mm board, so the floor can be sanded and refinished more times over its life.

Feel

Solid underfoot

A thicker board feels more like a traditional solid floor, and it spans better over timber subfloors. Every 20mm board here can be glued down or floated.

03

14mm or 20mm?

Both are real oak on a stable core. The choice comes down to height, budget and how long you want between sands.

Choose 14–15mm when

  • The floor height is still flexible
  • Underfloor heating is fitted and you want the lowest heat resistance
  • You want the widest choice of colours and patterns
  • Budget matters more than maximum sanding life
All engineered oak

Choose 20mm when

  • The screed or thresholds already set the height
  • You want the deepest oak layer and longest sanding life
  • The floor is going over a timber subfloor
  • You want the feel of a solid floor without its movement
Engineered vs solid

20mm Engineered Oak,
Answered

The questions we are asked most often.

Ask Us Anything →
Is 20mm engineered oak better than 14mm?
Not better, different. A 20mm board has a thicker oak layer, 5mm or 6mm on ours, so it can be sanded more times, and it feels more solid underfoot. A 14mm board is the better choice over underfloor heating and when the floor height is flexible. Most homes suit 14mm; choose 20mm when the height is already set or you want the longest life.
Can 20mm engineered oak go over underfloor heating?
Yes. Every board we supply is suitable for underfloor heating. A thicker board adds a little more resistance to the heat, so we glue it down over the heated screed for full contact, and we check the heating system output before specifying it.
How many times can 20mm engineered oak be sanded?
With a 5mm or 6mm oak wear layer, a 20mm board can be fully sanded many more times than a standard board. In practice that is decades of use, because most floors only need their finish refreshed rather than a full sand.
Can 20mm engineered boards be floated?
Yes. Every 20mm board here can be glued down or floated over a suitable underlay. We glue down over screed and underfloor heating, and float where the subfloor and the room suit it.
What widths do your 20mm boards come in?
Our 20mm floors come in 190mm and 200mm widths, in lacquered, oiled and distressed finishes. Each floor page gives the full specification and a downloadable spec sheet.
