Choosing a block size

Block size changes the rhythm of the pattern as much as the colour does.

Small

90mm blocks

A tight, traditional pattern with lots of movement. Suits hallways, period rooms and smaller spaces, where it makes the room feel richer.

Medium

125mm blocks

The most versatile size: classic proportions that work in most rooms, from kitchens to living rooms.

Large

150mm blocks

A bolder, more contemporary herringbone with fewer joints. Best in larger rooms and open-plan spaces.

03

Herringbone, done properly

Herringbone is the most demanding pattern to lay; the setting-out decides how it looks.

Every herringbone floor starts from a centre line, set so the pattern runs straight through doorways and sits symmetrically in the main room. Blocks are glued down to a flat, dry subfloor, which also makes them ideal over underfloor heating, and finished with a border or straight to the skirting.

Engineered herringbone uses the same real oak surface as solid parquet, on a stable core that moves far less. It can be sanded and refinished, and it is consistent enough to order in large areas. See our herringbone installation in London and the herringbone vs chevron guide.

Oak Herringbone,
Answered

The questions we are asked most often.

Ask Us Anything →
Is engineered oak herringbone as good as solid parquet?
It looks the same once laid, because the surface is real oak, and it is more stable. Engineered herringbone suits concrete floors and underfloor heating, where solid parquet blocks can move.
What size herringbone blocks should I choose?
90mm blocks give a tight, traditional pattern for hallways and period rooms; 125mm is the most versatile; 150mm suits larger, contemporary rooms.
Can oak herringbone go over underfloor heating?
Yes. Herringbone blocks are glued down over the heated screed and are very stable, because each small block moves so little.
Is herringbone flooring more expensive to fit?
Yes, it takes longer to lay than planks because of the setting-out and the number of blocks, so installation costs more per square metre. The floor itself is comparable.
Do you deliver herringbone flooring outside London?
Yes. We deliver engineered oak herringbone across the UK and fit it with our own team in London and the South East.
