Yes. The top of an engineered board is solid oak, and that layer can be sanded and refinished just like a solid floor. How many times depends on its thickness.
The wear layer is the solid oak on top of the board. The thicker it is, the more sands it can take.
Found on most 14mm boards. Enough for two or three full sands over the life of the floor, which is decades of normal use.
Found on our 15mm boards. A little more life, and a little more tolerance for deeper scratches.
Found on our 20mm boards. Close to the sanding life of a solid floor.
Each full sand removes well under a millimetre when it is done properly by a professional. Brushed and distressed boards lose some of their texture when sanded, and very thin wear layers of 2mm or less should be refreshed rather than sanded.
Most floors only need their finish refreshed.
An oiled floor can be cleaned, lightly abraded and re-oiled, either in worn areas or across a whole room, without sanding back to bare wood. A lacquered floor can be lightly abraded and given a fresh coat of lacquer. Both take the floor back to looking new without using up the oak layer.
A full sand is for deeper scratches and dents, changing the colour of the floor, or a floor that has been neglected for years. Our sand and restore team can assess whether yours needs one.
Send us a photo of the room and tell us about the subfloor and heating, and we will recommend the right board. Or order free samples to see them at home.
