Douglas fir gives you grain that oak cannot — broad, flame-like figure running the full length of a 260mm board. LIGNORA supplies and fits engineered Douglas fir flooring across London and the South East, manufactured in Britain rather than imported, in five tones from near-white to scorched dark.
Douglas fir grows fast, and fast growth writes itself into the timber. Where oak gives you tight, even figure, fir gives you wide bands of soft and hard growth alternating down the board — which, once brushed and coloured, reads as long flame-shaped grain with real depth. Put a 260mm fir board next to a 260mm oak board and the fir is doing something the oak physically cannot.
It is a softwood, and it behaves like one. It dents more easily than oak, and it deepens in colour faster under daylight. We say that before the order, not after it. The clients who are happiest with fir are the ones who wanted a floor that looks lived in, and would rather have character than perfection.
It suits scale. At 260mm wide and up to three metres long, with an option on 200mm widths, this is a floor for open-plan ground floors, large kitchens, converted lofts and long hallways — the rooms where a narrow board would read as busy. See the full range in the Douglas Fir Collection.
Almost every Douglas fir floor on the UK market is machined abroad and shipped in, which fixes the lengths, the widths and the finishes to whatever the container held. Ours is manufactured in the United Kingdom, so specification is a conversation rather than a catalogue.
Because the boards are made here, matching herringbone, chevron and bespoke stair treads can be cut from the same run of timber. The staircase, the hallway and the living space end up as one floor rather than three close matches under different light.
FSC® and PEFC certified timber, Made in Britain registered manufacture, over 80,000m² of engineered flooring produced a year with full control from timber selection through to final finish — and a 25-year structural warranty behind it.
If provenance matters on your project — for a listed building, a conservation area consent, or simply because you would rather know — we can document where the timber came from and where the board was made.
One unfinished board for projects that are finished on site, and four prefinished tones that are sealed at the factory and walk-on ready the day they are laid. Free samples are posted anywhere in the UK — fir shifts more between daylight and lamplight than oak, so judge it in your own room.
Sanded and raw. Finished in the room it will live in, so sheen and tone are set after you have seen it in your own light.
