Parquet flooring — laid in pattern, not in runs. Herringbone, chevron, basket weave, and finger block. New parquet installed by our own team across London and the South East, or original parquet blocks restored to the standard they were built to. LIGNORA does both.
The most-laid parquet pattern in London. Rectangular blocks laid at 90° to each other, creating a zigzag that draws the eye along the room's longest axis. Works in every room size — the block width determines the scale.
Most PopularBlocks cut at 45° so the pattern meets in a continuous point. More precise to lay than herringbone — waste is higher and the subfloor must be flat. The result is a cleaner, more geometric line that suits formal and contemporary rooms equally.
ContemporaryThe original Victorian parquet format — small square-ended blocks laid in herringbone. Authentic to period properties and the pattern most likely to be found under carpets in pre-1960s London houses. We restore and re-lay original finger block as well as supplying new.
Period AuthenticSquare blocks or groups of boards laid alternately at 90° to create a woven effect. Less common than herringbone but highly effective in larger rooms where a statement floor is wanted without the directionality of chevron or herringbone.
StatementA straight-laid floor follows the room. A parquet floor leads it. The pattern creates a visual centre of gravity that organises the space without any furniture in it — it is one of the few flooring decisions that changes the character of a room rather than simply covering it.
In period properties, herringbone parquet is architecturally correct — it was the standard floor treatment in reception rooms from the 1880s through to the mid-twentieth century. In contemporary properties, the same pattern reads as a design choice rather than a default.
The choice of block size matters. A 90×450mm block in a large open-plan space reads as generous and calm. The same room in 70×280mm blocks would feel busy. We advise on scale as part of every parquet consultation.
Engineered oak herringbone or chevron blocks supplied and laid by our own team. Subfloor preparation, glue-down or floating installation, and on-site finishing. Lead time 2–3 weeks. Full specification from our Design Collection.
Original Victorian and Edwardian parquet blocks re-adhered, cleaned, sanded and refinished in hardwax oil. We preserve what is there where possible. Full details on our parquet restoration page.
Parquet demands a flatter subfloor than straight-lay boards — typically no more than 3mm deviation over 1800mm. We assess and prepare the subfloor as part of every installation. Concrete and timber subfloors are both suitable with the correct preparation.
Parquet blocks must be glued down — floating installation is not appropriate for patterned formats. This means the subfloor must be clean, dry, and structurally sound. We use professional wood floor adhesives rated for the specific block weight and subfloor type.
All engineered parquet blocks in our Design Collection are underfloor heating compatible. The critical factor is the adhesive specification — different UFH systems require different adhesives. We confirm compatibility at survey stage.
We visit the property, assess what's there — or what's possible — and advise on the right approach before anything is quoted. One conversation, honest advice.
