How Much Wood Flooring Do I Need?

Measure each room, add the right allowance for cuts, and round up to whole packs. Use the calculator below, then send us the figure for a written quote.

Short answer: Measure each room's length and width in metres, multiply to get the area, add them together, then add 10% for straight-lay planks or 15% for herringbone and chevron to cover cuts. Round up to whole packs and keep a few spare boards from the same batch for future repairs. Updated October 2026 by the LIGNORA flooring team

How to measure

A tape measure and five minutes per room.

Measure the length and width of each room at its widest points, in metres, and multiply them to get the area in m². Split L-shaped rooms and open-plan spaces into rectangles and add them together.

Include alcoves, bay windows, the space under radiators and the floor through each doorway up to the threshold. Ask your fitter whether the floor will run under kitchen units — most floors stop at the plinth line.

03

Allowing for cuts

Why you always order more than the floor area.

Every floor loses some boards to cuts at walls, doorways and pipes. We allow 10% extra for plank floors and 15% for herringbone and chevron, where every block at the edge of the room is cut to the pattern.

Small or awkward rooms can need a little more; large, simple rooms a little less. Always round up to whole packs, and keep a few spare boards from the same batch — colour varies between batches, so they are the best match for any future repair.

The questions we are asked most often.

Ask Us Anything →
How much extra wood flooring should I order?
Allow 10% extra for plank floors and 15% for herringbone and chevron, then round up to whole packs.
How do I work out square metres for flooring?
Multiply the length of the room by the width, in metres. Split L-shaped rooms into rectangles and add them together.
Do I include the area under kitchen units?
Usually not — most floors stop at the plinth line of fitted units. Check with your fitter before you order.
Should I keep spare boards?
Yes. Keep a few boards from the same batch, because colour varies between batches and they give the best match for repairs.
