Best Wood Flooring for Pets and Children

Real wood can live happily with dogs, cats and small children — if you choose the right grade, colour and finish, and look after it in a few simple ways.

Short answer: Choose classic or character grade oak with natural knots, a brushed surface and a mid tone such as natural, honey or light smoked oak, which hide scratches and paw prints best. A hard-wearing lacquer or hardwax oil, mats at doors and trimmed claws keep the floor looking good. Updated October 2026 by the LIGNORA flooring team

01

Choosing the floor

Some floors hide everyday life far better than others.

Classic and character grade oak, with natural knots and grain movement, hides small marks much better than very clean prime grade. A brushed surface helps too: its texture breaks up light scratches that would show on a smooth board.

Colour matters as much as grade. Mid tones — natural, honey and light smoked oak — hide dust, paw prints and scratches better than very dark or very pale floors. See the oak grades guide.

02

Oil or lacquer?

Both work — they wear differently.

A lacquered floor has a hard surface film that resists spills and is quick to wipe clean. An oiled floor shows wear a little sooner, but a scratch can be re-oiled locally without refinishing the whole room.

For busy family homes with dogs, many people prefer oiled floors for that easy repair. Compare them in our guides to oiled oak and lacquered oak.

03

Everyday care

Small habits that keep the floor looking good for years.

Simple habits

  • Keep pets' claws trimmed
  • Put mats at outside doors to catch grit
  • Fit felt pads under chair and table legs
  • Wipe up spills and water bowls promptly
  • Clean with a damp — not wet — mop and a wood floor cleaner; avoid steam mops

Engineered boards with a 3–4mm oak wear layer can be sanded and refinished later if they ever need a fresh start. Can engineered wood be sanded?

The questions we are asked most often.

Ask Us Anything →
Is engineered wood flooring good with dogs?
Yes. A brushed, classic or character grade oak in a mid tone hides everyday marks well, and engineered boards are stable over underfloor heating.
Will dogs scratch a wood floor?
All wood can mark. Trimmed claws, mats at doors and a brushed, mid-tone floor keep marks to a minimum.
Is oil or lacquer better with pets?
Lacquer resists spills; oil is easier to repair because scratches can be re-oiled locally. Many dog owners choose oil.
Can scratches in a wood floor be repaired?
Light scratches on oiled floors can be re-oiled. Deeper wear on engineered boards with a 3–4mm wear layer can be sanded and refinished.
