Wood Flooring
for Home Offices.

The home office is the room that has changed most in London homes since 2020. It needs to look professional on camera, perform acoustically, and hold up under a desk chair — without feeling cold or corporate. A quality wood floor does all three. LIGNORA installs home office wood floors across London and the South East.

Herringbone

Herringbone reads exceptionally well on video calls — the pattern adds depth and visual interest to the frame without competing with the person speaking. In smaller home offices, a 90x450mm herringbone tile makes the space feel more considered and intentional. It photographs well for property listings and communicates professionalism without effort.

Wide Plank

Wide plank in a natural or lightly oiled tone creates a calm, focused working environment. It reads cleanly on camera and suits the Scandinavian or minimal aesthetic that has become standard in thoughtfully designed home offices. In a garden office or converted room, wide plank grounds the space without demanding attention.

Chevron

For a home office in a period London property — a Georgian study, a Victorian front room converted to an office — a straight-lay board in a period-appropriate tone integrates naturally with the room's architecture. We advise on board width and finish to match the character of the property rather than impose a contemporary treatment where it does not belong.

The Practical Home Office Floor
The Case for Wood Over Carpet in an Office

Carpet is the wrong choice for a home office. The reasons are practical, not aesthetic.

Desk chair performance. A desk chair on carpet degrades the carpet and the chair simultaneously — the castors sink, the pile mats, and movement becomes resistant. A wood floor allows a chair mat to be used or, for a quality engineered oak, the correct hard-floor castors to be fitted — the chair moves freely and the floor is unaffected.

Acoustic treatment. A hard floor in a home office is acoustically superior to carpet for voice clarity on calls — it reflects mid-frequencies cleanly rather than absorbing them unevenly. Paired with a desk mat or a partial rug, the acoustic balance of the room is controllable in a way carpet is not.

Appearance on camera. A wood floor — particularly herringbone or wide plank — reads as a premium background on video calls and in property photography. In a market where home offices add significant value to a London property, the floor is a visible signal of quality to buyers and tenants.

What to consider
in a home office specification

Desk chair castors. We advise on the correct hard-floor castors for your chair at survey stage. Standard office chair castors are designed for carpet and will mark a wood floor. Hard-floor castors — available for most chair models — distribute weight correctly and leave no marks.

Finish for office use. UV lacquer is our most common recommendation for home offices — it provides the hardest surface finish, is easiest to clean, and requires no annual maintenance. For those who prefer the feel of oiled wood, a hardwax oil with a high wear rating is available in our Signature and Prime collections.

Cable management at skirting. In home offices, cable runs at skirting level are common. We can advise on the best approach to skirting replacement or the use of cable trunking that integrates with the floor installation without requiring a return visit.

What Happens at
a Home Office Survey
01
Samples in Your Light

We assess the room — size, light, existing décor, and how it reads on camera. We bring samples and advise on tone, pattern, and finish together. For garden offices and outbuildings, we also confirm the subfloor specification and insulation requirement before recommending a product.

02
Subfloor Assessment

We check the subfloor for level, moisture, and stability. Home offices converted from bedrooms or box rooms in Victorian and Edwardian properties often have suspended timber subfloors — we confirm the correct specification for the existing subfloor type before quoting.

03
Desk Chair & Mat Planning

We advise on the correct hard-floor castors for your existing chair and whether a desk mat is appropriate for the product selected. This conversation happens at survey stage — not after installation when the floor has been marked.

04
Fixed Price Quote

After the visit, you receive an itemised written quote covering product, underlay, adhesive where applicable, installation, and any threshold or door trimming required. No hidden costs, no day-rate surprises. The price agreed is the price on invoice.
