Dunkeld Smoke 15.5mm Engineered Douglas Fir Plank, 260mm wide

Dunkeld Smoke is the quietest floor in the collection. A two-process colour sits over brushed Douglas fir and settles it into a soft weathered greige — warm underneath, cool on the surface, the tone of a board that has stood in daylight for a season. The fir grain still reads clearly through it, so the floor has movement without having colour.

Supplied in 260mm boards at random lengths up to three metres, with at least 80% of every pack between 1.7m and 3.0m. Manufactured in the United Kingdom rather than imported, and rated for underfloor heating. We install this floor with our own team in London and the surrounding counties, and supply it to the rest of the UK.

It is the easiest of the four prefinished tones to build a room around. Against off-white walls it reads warm; against a deep green or a stone kitchen it reads grey. In a 260mm board across an open-plan ground floor, that neutrality is what stops a strongly figured timber from taking over the space.

Styling it Dunkeld Smoke works with sage and deep green kitchens, aged brass, natural stone and black-framed windows. Oak or walnut furniture sits comfortably on it, and oatmeal or charcoal rugs both look right. It is also the most forgiving fir tone for homes with dogs and children, because the greige surface hides dust and light scratches well.

The board itself Two-layer engineered construction: a 3.7mm Douglas fir wear layer over 12mm hardwood plywood, 15.5mm in total, tongue and groove on four sides with a bevelled long edge and square ends. A heavier 20.5mm build with a 5.7mm wear layer can be ordered where screed has already set the floor height, and 200mm widths are available to order alongside the standard 260mm.

Living with it Prefinished boards arrive sealed, so the floor is usable the day it is laid — no curing, no smell, no waiting before furniture goes back. Day to day it wants a vacuum and a damp, never wet, mop with a pH-neutral wood cleaner. Douglas fir is a softwood and will take dents that oak would shrug off — we say this before every fir order, not after it.

Matching the rest of the house Because the boards are made in Britain, matching herringbone, chevron and bespoke stair treads can be cut from the same batch, so the staircase and the floor are the same floor.
