Every floor, finish and adhesive used by LIGNORA is VOC compliant. All products meet or exceed current European and UK emissions standards — including REACH, EN 14041 and the relevant A+ indoor air quality classifications. They are safe in occupied homes, in children's rooms, and above underfloor heating systems at full operating temperature.
VOCs — volatile organic compounds — are chemicals that evaporate at room temperature and can be inhaled. In building products, they are emitted by adhesives, finishes, sealants and composite wood products in the period after installation. At high concentrations, certain VOCs are associated with poor indoor air quality and health effects ranging from headaches to longer-term respiratory issues.
Low-VOC and VOC-compliant products emit below the thresholds set by EU and UK regulations — levels at which no meaningful health risk is established. The A+ classification (the highest level under French VOC labelling, which has become an informal European benchmark) indicates emissions so low they are considered safe for the most sensitive environments, including children's bedrooms and nurseries.
LIGNORA uses only products that meet or exceed these standards across the entire installation — boards, adhesives and finishes — not just the floor surface.
All LIGNORA engineered oak boards use adhesives in their construction that meet E1 (≤0.1 ppm) or E0 (≤0.05 ppm) formaldehyde emission standards — the two lowest classifications available. Formaldehyde is the most regulated VOC in flooring products.
Hardwax oils, lacquers and site-applied finishes used by LIGNORA are all water-based or low-solvent formulations with VOC content well below UK and EU limits. Rooms can typically be reoccupied within 24–48 hours of the final coat.
Polyurethane and MS polymer adhesives used for glue-down installations are REACH-compliant and low in isocyanates. They comply with the latest EU adhesive VOC directives and are safe once cured in occupied properties.
All LIGNORA products remain compliant at the maximum permitted floor surface temperature of 27°C. Elevated temperatures can increase VOC emission rates in non-compliant products — our products are specifically tested at operating temperatures.
All boards in the LIGNORA range use E1 or E0 rated adhesives in their plywood or HDF core construction. The oak veneer and wear layer are untreated natural wood — no added formaldehyde in the surface layer. Factory finishes (where pre-finished) are water-based UV-cured lacquers with negligible residual VOC emissions.
E1 / E0 · EN 13986 · REACHHardwax oils (Osmo, Rubio Monocoat, Bona), water-based lacquers and hardwax oil finishes used for site finishing are all low-VOC water-based or plant-oil based formulations. All carry A+ or equivalent certification. Reoccupation times are typically 24 hours after final coat.
A+ · GISCODE · Low-VOCPolyurethane and MS polymer adhesives used for all glue-down installations are REACH-compliant and isocyanate-aware — we use low-isocyanate formulations as standard. All adhesives are tested and certified under EN 14293. Once cured (typically 24 hours), they are inert and emit no ongoing VOCs.
REACH · EN 14293 · Low isocyanateUnderfloor heating raises floor surface temperatures, which can increase VOC emission rates in non-compliant products. All LIGNORA floors, finishes and adhesives are specifically tested and certified at the maximum permitted floor surface temperature of 27°C — not just at room temperature.
