How We Install
Herringbone in London
01
Free Home Survey

We visit the property and assess the subfloor — type, level, moisture content, and preparation required. We bring herringbone samples in the tile sizes relevant to your room and assess them in your actual light. Tile size, product, and finish are agreed at this stage.

02
Subfloor Preparation

Herringbone must be glued down to a flat, dry, stable subfloor. We prepare the subfloor as part of every installation — self-levelling compound where needed, moisture barrier where required. A herringbone floor laid on an uneven subfloor will show irregularities in the pattern within weeks.

03
Layout & Installation

The herringbone layout is set out from the centre of the room, working outward to ensure the pattern is balanced at the perimeters. Every board is glued directly to the prepared subfloor using a flexible wood floor adhesive rated for the product and subfloor type. No floating, no click systems.

04
Finishing & Skirting

After installation, the floor is inspected and any adhesive residue cleaned. Thresholds to adjacent rooms are fitted and detailed. Skirting boards are undercut or replaced. The floor is ready to use within 24 hours of installation completing — adhesive cure time is factored into the installation schedule.

Tile Size Guide
Choosing the Right
Herringbone Tile Size
90 × 450mm

The most common herringbone tile size for London hallways and smaller rooms. Proportionate in spaces under 120cm wide — the pattern reads clearly without feeling oversized for the room. Also used in bathrooms and utility spaces where LVT herringbone is not appropriate and a real wood finish is required.

Hallways · Smaller rooms · Traditional proportions
125 × 600mm

The most versatile herringbone tile size for London reception rooms, open-plan kitchen-diners, and larger hallways. Large enough to make a visual statement, proportionate in rooms from 12 to 40 square metres. The most commonly specified size in our London herringbone projects across Mayfair, Kensington, Richmond, and the South East.

Reception rooms · Kitchen-diners · Most popular format
143 × 600mm

A wider tile format that creates a more generous, contemporary herringbone. Well-suited to larger open-plan spaces, principal bedrooms in large properties, and rooms with high ceilings where the floor needs scale to match the architecture. Less common but increasingly chosen for high-specification London refurbishments.

Large spaces · High ceilings · Contemporary feel

Why the installation
method matters.

The most common failure point in herringbone flooring is incorrect installation method — specifically, floating a floor that should be glued down. A floated herringbone will develop movement at the joints and a hollow, clicking sound underfoot within months.

Every LIGNORA herringbone installation is glue-down as standard. The adhesive is selected for the specific subfloor type identified at survey — flexible adhesive for timber subfloors, hard-set adhesive for concrete and screed. This is not a detail we compromise on.

If you have been quoted for a floated herringbone installation, ask the installer to explain why. The answer will tell you what you need to know about the company.
