A Mayfair apartment requiring a prime-grade chevron floor across the reception and dining room — 62 square metres in total. The space had high ceilings, tall sash windows, and a classically proportioned layout. The floor needed to match that quality.
Prime-grade European oak chevron, as uniform as possible in grain and colour, with a satin lacquer finish to complement the formal character of the apartment. The geometry of the pattern was to be centred precisely on the fireplace wall in the reception room.
Setting out a chevron to a fixed architectural datum requires careful preparation. The centre line was established from the fireplace and carried through both rooms, with the chevron geometry calculated to arrive at the doorway threshold at a clean joint. The 90 × 600mm prime grade boards were glued direct to the concrete subfloor following moisture testing and priming.
The satin lacquer finish gives the floor the slightly formal quality the client wanted — cleaner and more reflective than an oiled finish, appropriate for the character of the apartment. The prime-grade selection means the floor is exceptionally uniform, which allows the geometry of the chevron pattern to read clearly without the distraction of wild grain or prominent knots.

Chevron is a more demanding installation than herringbone because the accuracy of the V-point depends entirely on the precision of the mill cut and the care taken in laying — there is no visual tolerance for drift the way herringbone can absorb minor misalignment. This Mayfair reception room was already an elevated space architecturally, and the brief was to give the floor the same level of attention as the rest of the room. Prime grade oak — minimal character markings, tight grain — was the appropriate choice for the specification.
The concrete subfloor was self-levelled prior to installation — a necessary step for glue-down chevron at this scale. Lacquer was selected over hardwax oil because the client required maximum durability for a formal reception room with consistent foot traffic. The lacquered finish also gives the prime grade oak a slight depth of sheen that suits the formal character of the room without appearing plastic or artificial.
Our Process
Every LIGNORA project begins with a home visit — we assess the subfloor, measure the space, discuss the brief, and bring sample candidates before writing a quote. This project was no different. The subfloor was assessed, moisture tested, and prepared before the floor was delivered to site for acclimatisation.
The floor was delivered to site and acclimatised in the property for the full required period before a single board was fixed. All LIGNORA floors are acclimatised in the actual conditions of the property — not in a van or garage. This is the single most important step in ensuring the floor performs across its lifetime.
Our installation team carried out the full job — subfloor preparation, installation, and on-site finishing — without subcontracting any element. The client received a seasonal installation warranty, written aftercare guidance, and a follow-up visit to confirm the floor had settled correctly.
Why Clients Choose LIGNORA
Own team only
No subcontractors on any LIGNORA installation. The people who quote the job are the people who lay it. Accountability from start to finish.
Acclimatisation without exception
Every floor is acclimatised in the property before installation. This is the step that determines long-term performance. We build it into every project schedule — it is never skipped.
Seasonal installation warranty
Every project comes with a seasonal warranty covering the installation through its first full temperature cycle. We follow up after installation to confirm the floor is performing as expected.
